About: I was taught to read music and play the recorder at my junior school, Broadfields in Harlow, Essex. Later I went to Netteswell Secondary school in Harlow where they had a brass band. I joined and they handed me an Eb Bass.
Netteswell Band became very successful at contests and performed at many prestigious venues including appearing as guests at the People National Brass Band Championship Festival Concert at the Royal Albert Hall in 1964. We were surrounded by seven Championship section bands. Not many musicians can say they have played with Cory Band, C.W.S.(Manchester) Band and G.U.S.(Footwear) Band.
After leaving school I played with Epping Forest Band and then Sandye Silver Band before joining Harlow Brass Band. By now I had played Eb Bass, Baritone, Cornet, Flugel and lastly Tenor Horn. After 60+ years you would think I have finally mastered it but playing still brings its challenges.
Lately I have joined a brass quintet, The Brass of St. Mary's (Sheering) where I play the 2nd Cornet part but on my Flugel. This is really exciting and most rewarding.
Favourite Piece of Music: Rhapsody in Brass, influenced by a vinyl record of C.W.S. (Manchester) I had when I was at Netteswell. Other contrasting favourites are Mellow Mood and the march Bramwyn.
