About: Being born in a mining area with 10 local brass bands in which multiple relatives had played and the local bandmaster's mum living next door, it was inevitable I would start playing. And, let's face it, there wasn't much else to do in a rural village in the 1970s, so I started learning the cornet when I was 7 (having quickly tried and abandoned the baritone). I moved onto tenor horn for a few years before returning to front row cornet, but eventually my education got in the way and I left the band in my teens. After a short break of about 40 years, I decided I needed something to do in my retirement so made one of my best decisions by buying a cheap cornet and starting again, more or less from scratch, to the incredulity of my wife. If I had kept playing at 15 I would probably be quite good by now. As it is, five years later it's an ongoing project, but I think I'm still improving!
